Church or Business?

CALVERY CHAPEL!!!

A tad lenghty but interesting...

I was invited to a "going-away" business-lunch Thursday two days ago. I agreed considering the person going away was someone I actually care about. The invite was to a very nice restaurant located in the downtown area.

Here we are Thursday and I get into work and the first thing I hear is that they bumped the lunch from one to noon. On top of that they changed the restaurant. I ask my co-employee which eatery we were heading to. She says something called The Calvary. The Calvary?!, I replied. Never heard of it...I right away go to the Internet and search for The Calvary...search returns nothing.

I then go to the lady who planned this excursion and ask her where we are going since we originally had decided on a fantastic place. Heres where it gets good...

She asks me if ive ever heard of The Calvary Chapel...Right then and there I had 1.647 million thoughts run through my mind. The first of which was are you freaking kidding me?! Everytime I hear those words it reminds me of David Koresh, Heavens Gate, or The Manson Family. I wanted to say it and she tells me we are leaving in a few minutes. Long story short we head to this place - I in my truck because they, seven people, hate smoking - turning in I feel like I am entering a new business district growing faster than the workers can keep up. As I drive around (lost) I finally find my group after dealing with an asshole security guard for running over his plastic thing.

I get out of my truck and light up, normally. Run into another asshole that starts complaining about me smoking while the kids where outside at lunch. I was outside with an ashtray the complex provided less then 10 feet away from me. Anyway, I start heading to the center of this complex taking in all the structures rising above me. Where do they get the money to build this shit? They have a school located in the center which, is fine and all, nothing against education. The fact that this whole entire complex is behind a mass amount of landscape and a security fence. Granted this isnt the best place to not have a fence but a church. Multimillion dollar structures and technology with hundreds of flat-screen plasma T.V.s playing the same crap over and over again...like mass suicide is about to occur, only in your mind.

Folks this isn't a church. This is a brainwashing facility. First lets think about this. Every Christian family who attends here donate 10,000 dollars or more of there FAMILY income per year. This specific complex has 19,000 members. Not every member donates so (roughly) lets say four family members per family and you get 4,750 families. Each family takes in $80,000 dollars per year and that's higher than this state's average income per family per year. Thats roughly 38 million dollars per year at a tax-exempt status. $38,000,000 PER YEAR FOLKS!

In turn, the problem that I have with all this, is that I see it as a business instead of a church. The people who run this organization sure drive really nice cars while the lower-class family looking for guidance and hope, pulling in less than 60,000 dollars a year are donating six-thousand dollars of their hard earned money for what? Mom still drives a used up 1987 vehicle with more than 150,000 miles on it. In the end they are the same. Nothing came down and saved them but someone paid his/her bills out in Parkland.

Church or business...not giving two shits who's been helped so as long as they receive a paycheck and are living comfortably?

Business, I don't know. Scam, totally. Those organizations are the equivalent of snake oil sellers.

Okay so many churches are a spiritual scam. But that doesn't mean that they are all that way. I would say that you have about 10% of the churches who preach the whole truth are not based on money. And I can estimate this because I have been an ordained minister for 33 years now. But 10% is still a very low number. But the people who are in the other 90% will still go to heaven because they believe in Jesus and you will still fry and cry in hell because you did neither. And most of their ministers will be in hell with you!!

This is why as a Christian I hate organized religion. It destroys the true faith in favor of militaristic churches and religious legalism. Personal freedom and choice as GOD intended is left at the security gate.
